What, or rather who psychic vampires really are? Psychic vampire Michelle Belanger answers this question in her Psychic Vampire Codex on nearly 300 pages. She deals with all misconceptions and myths about psychic vampirism phenomena. But that’s not all. Within the book, every person interested in energy work and psychic abilities will find unique guide to utilizing and using these skills.

Psychic Vampire Codex is meant for at least three types of people. First, psychic vampires themselves, especially for those who are just learning about their nature. Second type is people dealing with energy work of different sort – from psychics to magicians, who would like to learn a little bit more about using psychic energies in their lives. And finally, third type is called by me “civilians” – people who would like to learn more about real psychic vampirism, beside idiotic and false beliefs that growth to common thing in our society.

The Codex Within

Forget about everything you have learned about vampires from novels. And forget everything you have learned about them from psychic self-defense books. Forget everything you have learned about them from this website. It’s so wrong, and Michelle explains it in details. She provides you info about nature of psychic vampirism, its history, and community.

She provides freshly awaken vampires guide to their nature, explaining what they are and who they are. She helps them in their own growth and development. Finally, she provides tons of info about energy work, psychic self-defense, psychometry, past-life memories recalling, meditation, grounding and centring, psychic sensitivity, psi-balls, aura sight, and detailed guide to psychic healing. And that’s just tip of an iceberg.

The Codex is simple filled with information about practical psychic abilities.

Pros & Cons

What I really like about the Codex, is that it doesn’t force the reader to believe in anything. Like Black Vail it tells you to find your own path. With no references to spirituality and “vampiric faith”, the Codex provides you with practical information. This also makes it good book for mentioned three types of people. You can just read it without practice and belief, and it will still be a good reading.

I can’t deny I also love the DTP work – design of the cover, the paper, the fonts. Boys and girls at Weiser Books have done a great job.

I can’t find any cons beside small one – the Codex isn’t really codex-like :). First of all, it’s a little bit short, I would expect it to be at least 500 pages long, filled with even more detailed how-to information. Second of all, and I think Michelle will agree with me on this, the Codex should own hardcover. A Codex in paperback? Nah, that just ain’t right :).

Summary

If you want to learn more about real psychic vampires, or you are one, or at least you suspect you might be one; if you want to become better psychic and/or energy worker, then Psychic Vampire Codex is for you. Don’t let the name mislead you – it’s a perfect guide to psychic abilities!

The Psychic Energy Codex is one of few books that even if they use the term “psychic”, in reality can be read by everyone interested in psionics – specific way to perceive psychic abilities. But terminology really doesn’t matter, what does matter is the content of the book, and the knowledge it shares. Within nearly 270 pages in paperback cover you will find a unique guide to developing psychic abilities.

The Psychic Energy Codex will teach you about many aspects of the psychic living and development – from meditation to visualisation and energy manipulation. It discusses auras, anatomy of energy, psychometry, and different aspects of psychic development – learning process, objectivity, perception etc. In short, it talks about every mandatory aspect of psychic development y0u can think of, everything that has been mentioned and discussed here, on A State of Mind.

The good stuff

And what is good about it, is the form of the “teaching”. Michelle surely got experience in writing, and she share her knowledge easily. More than that, she doesn’t force you to believe in anything, and she let you to choose your path and believes. She presents different points of view and different theories, teaching you that everyone perceive the world in different way, which is a very important element of psychic development.

An interesting element of the book is a way that Michelle merge together theory, practice and use of psychic journal. I haven’t read any book about psychic development that would use all these things in a way Michelle did in Psychic Energy Codex.

The book gives you detailed theory, detailed practical exercises and a lot of tips and advices. But…

The dark side

There are also bad sites – for example, after reading the Codex, I got that feeling of disappointment  - it’s not a miracle or even complete how-to guide. Once again it proves to me that there’s no such guide available (which gives me a chance to write it), and that you need to read many books in order to master psychic abilities.

Some people might don’t like the idea of spending many months on practising exercises from this book, but that’s the reality, that psychic development requires time. But if you will follow the book step by step, you will get results.

Summary

Michelle’s book promote rational thinking free of spiritual and New Age doctrines. The Psychic Energy Codex is a fine addition to your library. Such workbook filled with theory and exercises, written by experienced energy worker who knows the job, is a mandatory reading for everyone who want to learn how to develop psychic abilities. I can’t really think of writing anything else, but to recommending this book to everyone interested in psychic development and psionics!

What are the Letters from Raymond about

It’s author – Pam Adams – lost her husband when he was brutally murdered yet she was able to reconnect with him once again – and he channelled her via psychic means the wisdom form the afterlife – this wisdom is the primary subject of the book. The personal approach

I enjoyed Adams personal approach to the book – I’ve seen a lot of books that discuss messages from the afterlife and channelling in very mechanical way, like the people writing them had no idea what they were writing about and they wanted to make money and nothing else. Pam Adams surely knows why she wrote the book – she had a knowledge and wisdom to share and you can feel that is the main goal of this book.

New Age propaganda

The book itself wasn’t the best book I ever read, because of too strong “god, peace and love” approach typical for new age writing as I use to call it. I’m not Christian and I really don’t like books that refers to Christianity and Christian approach to psychic phenomena or the afterlie – it’s a way too much for me and this is what I would call “new age propaganda”. In reality, such “one-religion” is worth nothing because for many people it might sounds like there is only one point of view which they might not agree with – while the reality is, what you will find inside Letters from Raymond is…

The universal knowledge

Indeed, strip the book of new age love, mentioning Christian God and other relations to Christianity and you will find out, that what Pam Adams wrote, is in reality a universal knowledge that is present in our world since the ancient time, and right now it can be found in many eastern religions and philosophies.

The law of attraction, karma, or simple things like love, compassion or acceptance, and other elements of ancient philosophies can be found inside – therefore I believe that including Christian approach to the subject was unnecessary and in reality – gave the book much less audience that it could receive with more neutral stand. That’s probably the greatest disadvantage of this book which makes it difficult to read the book by people who deal not with Christianity in any way.

Summary

Written with readable font on pleasant paper, the book is worth reading for every person in need of positive thoughts and teachings. There’s only one requirement – you should be Christian, otherwise you might get irritated. I have reviewed a lot of books in my life and I know the job – my personal feelings can’t get in the way of professional approach of experienced reviewer – therefore, I have no objections to recommend the book - as long as you’re prepared for the Christian talk.

The book published by Bennion Kearny press come in paperback, with 325 pages filled with text. I have to admit that the editorial side of this publication has been done well. The font is well readable and of reasonable size, there’s no space wasted for useless images and sketches. Based on my editorial experience I have to admit that from technical point of view, it’s a great book! :) But what’s inside?

Fiction

The first part of the book is a pure paranormal fiction. It’s a well written story of paranormal investigator who in some way is forced to investigate poltergeist activity in small US town. I have to admit, I do not like fiction stories, but this one caught my attention. The story is realistic and and it keep the reader in suspense till the very end. For those who know few things about real poltergeist phenomena and paranormal activities there will be nothing “extraordinary” in this book. And it’s pretty normal, since the book has been written by professional paranormal investigator.

Characters in the story (and there’s a lot of them) are clear, “sharp”. They got their own personality and behaviour, their own past and their own life with problems and it’s all written in the book. The story will drag you into fascinating supernatural action filled with additional information regarding parapsychology – the reader is being taught about the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the unknown along with Luke explaining what he deals with to other characters. Which lead me to another part of this review…

Popular science

What I really love about the book is the second part, the popular science part. Within the fiction part you will notice a lot of reference marks to the endnotes that build the popular science part. This section contains tons of information about the current state of psychical and paranormal knowledge from scientific point of view. Which leads me to another thing, that the author balance with ease between healthy scepticism and believe in reality of paranormal phenomena. Which is how things should always look like.

But (there’s always but) the popular science section is definitely too general in my opinion, JJ Lumsden just smatter the subject, yet what else it is to expect from this kind of book? It’s not just the fictional story nor just the scientific paper, it’s something between. Still, great idea to put such expanded endnotes to a novel like this.

Is it worth it?

Definitely yes! If you’re interested in parapsychology, paranormal investigations and especially poltergeist phenomena, then I recommend reading this book. But it’s also useful information source for anyone interested in general paranormal and psychic phenomena thanks to the endnotes. The Hidden Whisper will keep you company in the evening, providing you with great paranormal fiction story, and it will also be your start point to explore more scientific information regarding the unknown.

A technical review

Written by J.M. Greer, experienced occultist and modern druid, author of numerous books on the subject of occult and the paranormal, The New Encyclopedia of the Occult published by Llewellyn Worldwide, is probably the best, most up-to-date guide to different aspects 0f Western occultism. Containing thousands of terms about magic, alchemy, astrology, divination, Tarot, palmistry, magical orders and guilds, discussing Wicca, Thelema and others, this book is a great reference work for everyone who is either a beginner or experienced practitioner of the occult.

Over 500 pages filled with text, terms are well described, supported by dates and reference marks to other terms located in the book, and sometimes even with illustrations helping you understand the terms. And at the end of the encyclopedia, you’ll find a huge reference work of bibliography, listing hundreds of books you might find useful when exploring the knowledge further.

What’s good, what’s bad…

What I really like in Greer’s work is that it is very objective. Author does not present his point of view even if he’s such experienced occultist, instead he’s merging different points of view, theories and historical facts, presenting them in clear way – mentioning when something is a proven fact, and when something is just a myth without any proofs. He’s beliefs aren’t important right now, the general knowledge is. And this is why Greer’s work is probably the best occult encyclopedia right now.

What’s bad in my opinion that the book is too short :). I mean, it’s huge, but personally I would like to see really huge work made of few volumes, 700 pages each – that would be a real reference work :).

It doesn’t change the simple fact, that The New Encyclopedia of the Occult is the best encyclopedia of the occult currently available. You have nothing to wait for, if you’re into the occult and the supernatural, buying this book will be a good choice.

About the book

10 years old boy, Jared Millhouse and his dad plan to spend an uneventful summer on his grandfather s farm in Lone Jack, Missouri. Then Jared runs into the ghost of a Civil War innkeeper and wonders if he s lost his mind. With the help of his grandfather–and some local characters–Jared and the Crossroads Gang uncover the truth about the Civil War battle that trapped so many bloodthirsty ghosts in Lone Jack. They even recruit a pair of eccentric ghost hunters to help. When it comes to facing down the local bully, dodging the power-crazy sheriff, or escaping convicts, Jared can count on his friends. Together, they face haunted baseball diamonds, embattled cornfields and abandoned mines. But when Confederate and Union ghouls line up on the battlefield, the entire town relives the gruesome Battle of Lone Jack, as it was fought in 1862. Then only Jared can save the town from its ghosts.

The review

First of all, The Ghosts of Lone Jack is meant for kids, so it was my first big threshold to make through – it’s hard to read a book for kids if you’re an adult, not mentioning reviewing it, yet I wrote hundreds of reviews in my life already, so I knew what to do. After few first pages, I managed to change the frequency of my mind and I became a kid once again, and the reading became easier – this is the first major advantage of the book, the language itself; it’s simple and easy to read, if I can understand everything with my English skills, no kid should have any problems finishing the book because of the words on his own (and in addition, for me as person whose English isn’t native language, it’s a great opportunity to learn some slang, too!).

The story is a typical adventure for young people, we have a young hero, a gang of kids, an opposite gang to fight with, some baseball play, some ATV races, family relations included, some romance, and some paranormal fiction: freaked ghost hunters and demonic entities (more like ghouls than demons though) – well, the paranormal part of the is a little overdone, instead of classic apparitions we have ghouls that can hurt people. But it’s an element of the entertaining part of the book. It was meant to be entertaining after all, and I won’t overdo it by saying the Ghosts of Lone Jack is action-packed – you (I mean your kid) just can’t get bored.

But entertaining is not the most important thing here, the educational part is. Whole story is placed in historical location, the town of Lone Jack, and this creates an opportunity to teach kids about their heritage, the history of their country – the Civil War to be more specific. I’m a Pole, and because of this, because of history of my own country, I understand why the heritage of our (I mean each and every) nation is so important. Also I greatly enjoy reading about history, and because of this, I have to admit that the fragments describing the actual battle of Lone Jack were the most interesting parts of the whole book. Right now, I can’t really think about any better way to teach kids about history of your country than by giving them book that is both action-packed and so educational.

I can’t really think about any disadvantages of the Ghosts of Lone Jack. Well, maybe it’s a little too “realistic” from time to time, I mean – there are fragments describing ghouls attacks in which our older heroes use weapons to literally kill the beasts, there we have descriptions of loosing certain parts of the bodies by ghouls. On the other hand, maybe it’s a way of author to describe the brutality of war to young readers?

At the end, The Ghosts of Lone Jack is a good book and it’s a fine addition to the Librarium Parapsychologicum in paranormal fiction section. I recommend it for all parents out there who want their kids to learn some history about USA and the Civil War from an entertaining book. Lee Noel have made a great job writing this book! I guess I’m starting to like paranormal fiction, and now I’m just waiting for similar books about historic locations in Europe!

Robert Bruce is an experienced energy worker, creator of New Energy Ways energy development system, skilled in astral projection and dealing with negs – the negative astral beings. Practical Psychic Self-Defense is a book written based on his numerous years of studies and personal experiences. Within over 300 pages, tons of knowledge has been included.

Knowledge within

The book itself is divided into three sections. First, you’re going to learn about negs, what are they, what are their types, and what are their relationship between them and humans. Then, you’re going to learn about the way of neg influences and psychic attacks, and how to recognise them. Finally, you’re going to learn methods of passive and active countermeasures against negs, from learning about simple herbs, to simplify neg banishment ritual and dealing with possession and exorcisms. All of this knowledge is interlaced with Bruce’s personal experiences and cases he dealt with over the years.

What I really like about this book is that things are described in very simple way. There’s no occult theory, no difficult words, no weird stuff, things are just described as they are and as they work. Some pieces of the book can be considered as “trivia”, for example you will finally understand why garlic works against negative spirits ;).

What’s really great it’s that Bruce doesn’t force you to believe in any negs or any unseen energies, he just present his experiences and methods of dealing with things, it’s up to you to choose if you want to believe. Also, Bruce doesn’t sugar-coat things, he says openly some thing can be damn dangerous and even lead to death. He describe simple facts and he’s presenting methods of dealing with the unseen, no sugar, no colouring things, and no boring theories. Everything is presented in very simple, yet very knowledgeable way.

A must-read

For every person dealing with occult, paranormal or psychic phenomena, Practical Psychic Self-Defense is a must-read. You won’t become a professional exorcist thanks to it, but it will give you some basic understanding as for how banishing demons and dealing with negative beings really works. For everyone else, it is good to have this book on your bookshelf, you never know when you might need it. But as Bruce himself wrote in the book, “I hope you will never need the knowledge from this book, ever.”

Maureen Caudill graduated summa cum laude in physics University of Connecticut, received a master’s degree from Cornell University, and she’s a senior scientist for a major United States Department of Defense contractor. She specialize in Artificial Intelligence and neural networks. She’s not just a scientist, but also a writer, writing about neural networks and robotics for MIT Press and Oxford University Press. And that’s just a small excerpt from her biography – as you can see, she’s a bit of a scientist :).

This is why her book “Suddenly Psychic” is so important, as pure scientist she became a psychic thanks to Hemi-Sync technology and courses at The Monroe Institute. That’s what her book is about: about experiencing altered states of consciousness, achieving success in out-of-body experiences and remote viewing, and setting first steps in spiritual journey.

Caudill described her sceptical, yet open-minded approach to psychic phenomena, and all the things she experienced since she first encountered the Hemi-Sync technology. But more than that, in Suddenly Psychic she is also looking for scientific explanations behind psychic phenomena and paranormal. Her books shows us that no matter if you’re a spiritual new age geek or sceptical scientist, you should keep an open mind – only then you can find out the truth, or at least learn that there’s no “just science” or “just spirituality” out there, but these two things exists together, you can’t ignore any of them.

Suddenly Psychic isn’t the “how-to guide”, you won’t learn anything practical from it. This book is about personal spiritual journey, personal experiences and discovering the spiritual world, yet exploring the science behind things we can’t explain, by summarising latest scientific discoveries and comparing them to ancient esoteric knowledge. All of this seasoned with a bit of humour.

If you’re looking for equilibrium between new age psychics and pure science, Suddenly Psychic is a book you must read. It will teach you how important is faith, how important is asking questions, how important is spirituality and how important is science, how important all these things are when they are together. If you’re interested in psychic phenomena, Suddenly Psychic is just a “must have” position in your library.

Liz Simpson wrote a about our own planet, Earth, presenting it as a forgotten goddess: Gaia. In The Healing Energies of Earth she is discussing the entire ecosystem and our own human place on this planet, our dependencies and responsibilities towards Earth as living organism. Topics range from the beliefs of our ancestors and pagan religions, to Wicca, and to pure aspects of modern shamanism. Thanks to this book you will also learn the basic informations about Ley Lines, Dowsing, Crystals, Feng Shui, and even something about chakras, finally you will learn about healing properties of crystals, fruits and vegetables, and herbs as well. All these informations are described shortly, after all the book itself is very short, it has only 160 pages and it is written with big font. Although this means it’s easy to read, I feel like something is missing, definitely the book is too short for my personal mind :). Also, the book is beautifully illustrated (or should I say: “imaginated”), this is making reading of this book even easier and more pleasurable. But, it’s not a scientific publication, so no one should be expecting a lot of complex text only for scientific minds, right? Even if Liz Simpson’s book is presenting many different elements and aspects of our “spiritual” nature in very… short way, it’s not a con, but an advantage of this publication, as it’s giving you the general look at many things, and from this single book you can move forward in your explorations, as you know what to look for.

If you’re interested in learning some basics about mentioned things such as crystals of feng shui, but you don’t want to start with many fat books, you should definitely read this book. It’s short, simple and a pure pleasure :).

193 pages of text (+/-) is an interesting reading indeed, yet after only few pages a person taught by PsiPog will notice a lot of “fluff” in this book. It is because Hewitt is very often making references to spirituality and he is speaking about all this love and peace, like he would want to change the whole world with one book. Fortunately, reader can simple ignore spirituality and love from this book and follow interesting case studies from Hewitt’s own life, and 44 practical exercises for developing psychic abilities.

What is interesting that after so many years in psychics world I had to grab a book to understand the importance of altered states of consciousness in developing psychic skills. Describing different brain waves and altered states of consciousness is the first important topic in whole book. “Psychic Development for Beginners” is teaching how to access the “basic psychic level” in very simple and user-friendly way, and then how to use this level to make using psychic skills such as telepathy or psychic healing easier.

Book is also presenting an idea for “Psychic Goal Bowl“, a way to keep you focused on your life goals. Unfortunately, that is all I can say about Hewitt’s book – you won’t find any “miracle techniques” in it, you won’t learn about bending spoons, and except learning about altered states of consciousness and using basic psychic level to increase the “accuracy” of your skills, you won’t learn anything interesting.

Or at least a scientific mind won’t – if you’re deeply into this spiritual stuff, you might find this book very interesting, if you’re not, you can read it only learn about basic psychic level. And due to the fact book is easy to read, it might be also a pleasure reading for cold winter evenings.
