Psychic Community – open or closed?

Nathaniel, September 17th, 2009 ,

Looking only at psychic community is a mistake, and looking at general energy workers community is depressing :). I was exploring the Linux community lately, and I’ve seen – websites, blogs, forums, wikis, online apps, e-magazines – a real, open community willing to share ideas and knowledge. I begun to wonder, if the OEC is an open or closed community, but soon I realised that this isn’t the issue here – the lack of organisation is…

You see, there are people with psychic abilities and skills (beginning from simple increased sensitivity), but without technical knowledge. There are people with scientific knowledge, but without any psychic skills. There are people with vision, but without anyone willing to help them. And there are people with both psychic and technical skills, but with not enough time to do anything. People with different skills and ideas often do not know about existence of the OEC (even the OEC in current state), and they can’t learn about this fact without any coordination between OEC.

Next issue: people are lazy, they’re not willing to work if they won’t get anything in return – this is a big problem indeed. In the world today people can’t find enjoyment in process of creating something from scratch, they get everything on plate – they turn on TV and they have latest news, they check their mailbox, and they have a way to contact friends, they use google and they gain the knowledge – no hard work included, no satisfaction when you’re achieving something after many months of hard work. People can’t feel the pleasure of creation today…

No off-line groups – no face-to-face contact, no one to motivate you, no one to talk with (and believe me, talking via instant messengers isn’t the same). No place to brainstorm new ideas, to conduct experiments and research.

All of this leads us to the simple fact: when it comes to OEC, the Web should be a medium to exchange data being collected by people. Instead, it became a tool to waste your time. There’s simple no way to exchange OEC-related data in the web today, there’s no proper websites, no proper forums, and most important, no real organization, no coordination between existing websites.

Collecting data is the first step to wisdom, but sharing data is the first step to community.

People alone are collecting data. People in groups explore the collected data. Internet is a tool to share data between groups. And groups along with people are those who are creating means to share data via internet. But no one can work alone. One person can’t do 100% of the todo list, but 10 people can do 10% of the todo list each, and the task can be accomplished.

What should be done?

Creating yet another “a reborn of OEC” website isn’t the solution here. This is what I see:

  1. People need to feel the passion – without it, nothing can be achieved.  Only with passion they can begun exploring this fascinating world of supernatural.
  2. Then, people need to gather into groups, groups with strong offline presence, and strong online presence, to share experiences and ideas, motivate each other.
  3. Groups, not single marauders, should be the “bodies” to create more complex websites (more complex than personal blog). Here are some ideas for websites. This way, the work can be easily coordinated and the things needed to be done can be shared between group members. Not mentioning the fact, that such project would bond group members together even stronger.
  4. Finally, groups should find a way to establish relations between each other, to exchange “technical” experiences (how to deal with management problems for example), beginning from simple webrings, to “diplomatic” discussion forums.
  5. Only then, when there are people with passion, and groups running complex projects, we can move to another step: organizing off-line conventions :).

But…

Is there a point to do anything? Wouldn’t it be easier just to look for some occult forum, grab some books and keep learning things while being alone? Or maybe it’s easier to look around for some research group like SPR, or even local paranormal investigators group? Is there a need to create something new? To be honest, I do not know if there’s a need. But I know – if you feel you would like to see something new, something that doesn’t exists yet, go for it! Do something to create something new. And if you think “the new” isn’t needed, but you would like to share things you know, then perhaps joining some local ghost hunters is the right thing to do?

What do you think?

  1. Very good post. I agree with what you’re saying, especially regarding laziness and off-line groups. I personally think that an offline group or groups is key. Its more personal, you have that face to face support and its easier to enforce standards; someone isn’t practicing or being active in the group, they are out unlike online where people can just lurk without contributing anything at all.

  2. Indeed, very nice post! I agree on almost everything you said, especially on the lack of organasation fact.

You have my vote in the OEC president election (joke).

I would like to note the problem with offline and, in case of having events, online communities is the fact that Psioncs are scattered around the world… Which means physicall meetings are nearly impossible to arange and IRC classes and meetings rather difficult to arange as well… This makes the communities a bit weaker, in my opinion.

Also, learning stuff on yourvown is not always the best option… Two (or more) people will spot inconsistencies and flaws in theories, where one person might not. Plus it’s hard and not fun to practice telepathy, empathy, ESP etc. all alone :-/.

    My 2 cence…

P.S. I discovered the world of RSS and have subs cribed to your blog Tassadar ;).

  3. But Tao says “stay away from politics” :P

As to offline groups, I’ve started a few. The trick is to not bother trying to find people who already do it, but to teach a few you think would be interested. One of the groups was a “sub-group” in my boy scouts troop. My current troop has around 6 energy workers. Every camp out we practice a bit (once a month). Last time a friend of mine aped for the first time.

Of course, there are still people that just hang around and watch and don’t contribute much, and a few that only bother doing things like inscribing sigils of “horniness” around peoples tents… There’s not much you can do about it.

  5. Scouts Energy Workers, you say? Hmm, fascinating ;). Indeed, an interesting advice, this about teaching people who might be interested. I have to add it to my ideas book for future references regarding a group I want to create, thanks!
