Magic is psychics – this was my statement I’ve posted on blog three months ago. Two months later I triad to look on the matter from a different side, and today thanks to few hours of free time, I want to share my thoughts – magic psychics, but psychics is a philosophy. Well, technically I still prefer to refer to it as “psychicic science”, but… this is more complex.

Psychic Development Simplified
So first of all, magic is psychics – just like psychic abilities are form of magic. Psionics is both psychicic science (a mixture of occult, science, theoretical research) and philosophy. Psionic Science refer to studying the unexplainable, psychics as philosophy refer to way of living and practising psychic abilities. More than that, psychics is a mixture of different elements.
The Elements of Magic
Psychic development draw many elements from magic, for example rituals – although magic is not only about rituals, it’s good thing to start :). Centring and grounding, two important skills in psychic development sometimes can be extended from pure mind matter to more materialistic ritual, like when you feel you center or ground better when sitting in dark room with burning candles and incenses. This can be considered as ritual.
But from magic, psychics draw mainly physical metaphors. In Wicca, we have bolline – ritualistic knife, used for gathering herbs and preparation to different magical rituals, and we have more practical knife – athame. Those are my “physical metaphors”, used to enforce your focus on the task you’re about to perform. Yet perhaps the best metaphor is the magic wand :), also a mean of focus. In psychic development, there are also metaphors – psychics are also using, for example, white sage to cleanse negative psychc energies. You might be using notebook to enforce your focus on psychic development, and you might use pendulums and crystals for more practical uses.
The Elements of Science
Collecting data, writing down personal experiences and experiences of others, keeping a journal and finally, researching the phenomena and often doing experiments i.e. with crystals or energy constructs, all of this and more is an element of science. Some scientific approach is important in psychics, it was important in the beginning and it’s important now, as it’s pushing our own knowledge further, which is allowing us to find methods of developing our skills faster.
The Elements of Spirituality
Peace of mind and meditation, an undisciplined mind can not achieve much in psychic development. Psionics is also about spiritual growth, finding inner peace and understanding our own purpose in this world. In some religions, you’re praying, in other, you’re meditating. Either way, the point is to learn the psychic ability to quiet and focus your mind. Focus is a path to learning new things fast, and contemplation is a mean to achieve better spiritual understanding of the world, which is resulting in you being a better person.
The summary
As you can see, it appears there is no way to easily describe psychics. It’s not just science or just practise, it’s both science and philosophy, both intertwining with each other, a way of living. But another question appears on horizon – is it so important trying to define what psychic development is and what it is not? Is it important to define the differences between magic and psychic abilities? Maybe it’s important for scientific approach, but for general development of mind and personality? I begun to have doubts…
