Science VS Spirituality

Nathaniel, January 7th, 2009 , ,

After reading Psychic Development for Beginners, a book by William Hewitt (review soon on A State of Mind) and Suddenly Psychic by Marueen Caudill, I became somehow confused – due to all this spiritual and “love” stuff, as a result, I have to rant a little, and unfortunately you happened to be my readers ;).

So, Mr. Hewitt wrote in his book that to be a psychic is to love everything and everyone (in general) – and to be honest, I have some problems with loving everything and everyone, as definitely I have a materialistic mind. More confusion was caused by Suddenly Psychic – spirits, angels, guardians, higher planes of existence, karma, chakras and so on… Fortunately, Mr. Caudill presented a lot of scientific explanations for psychic and spirituality – uff…

With these two books I’ve learned something important – the fact I don’t feel very comfortable with spirituality – I can accept it as long as there are scientific explanations (get Suddenly Psychic for more details), but without such explanations, I can only accept that there is something going on, but it can’t be proven (weird, huh?).

Despite my past and some of my believes, I’m a type of a person who will always ask “why” and “how”, instead of just believing. When I will be forced to choose between spirituality and math I have problems with, I will choose math – because knowing something and understanding how does it work is giving us this sense of safety – and this is very comfortable.

In the opposite, the sense of the fact there are some spiritual beings out there and there is this “karma” and “love” stuff is nearly prohibiting from learning more about psychic phenomena – from one side, people are telling you that you have to learn psychic powers and use them to make good things, to help people, as without it, these skills won’t work at all. And on the other side, people are telling you that in order to use psychic skills, all you have to do is to learn how to access altered states of consciousness and use them in order to control the innate psychic abilities you have since the day you’d been born.

Which side is correct, which path is the right to walk? Right now I think the second path is good enough, as it works – take a look, during Stargate program no one was asking if things these viewers were doing were right. In Russia, psychics were killing frogs with psychokinesis. Therefore, it is safe to say psychic skills aren’t depending on love and spirituality at all – yet he ethical side of the use of psychic skills is a different matter. As someone said, there is no good or bad skills, there is only good or bad use of them…

Math vs Spirituality? I’d have to go with spirituality, I can’t BS my way out of math!

Unfortunately, as long as psychic phenomena are written about by spiritual people, the entanglement with it is hard to remove. Especially with psionics. Many article I have read were a few words away from being completely fluff.
